Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Davit Zalkaliani commented on the bill which suggests to put economic sanctions on Georgia, in case it undermines its commitments or contractual agreements with the citizens of the United States.

The bill was introduced to the House of Representatives by Markwayne Mullin, United States representative for Oklahoma and it did not specify against which US investor or company was this referring to.

Foreign Affairs Minister stated that the bill didn’t have any support from the House of Representatives and claimed that it will not have support in future as well.
He also elaborated that this bill concerns the dispute between US based company “Frontera” and Oil and Gas Corporation of Georgia. The case is now being discussed in the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC).

“According to the US legislation, any congressman has the right to introduce the bill, however, another issue is how much support this bill will gain afterwards.
There have been attempts since 2017, but there was no support as a result. This bill was introduced by Mr. Mullin in February and I assure you that no other congressman has supported it. There won’t be any support, because the case is being discussed in the arbitration court in Stockholm and I am sure that the court will have its say in regards to this dispute”, stated Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Company “Frontera” was interested in exploring gas supplies in Georgia, specifically in Akhmeta. The company was claiming that it could find the gas supplies worth 3,8 trillion cubic meters in Georgia. However, the Minister of Energy at the time, Kakha Kaladze did not agree with these statements.
