“Nenskra HPP structures will be constructed with the same advanced technologies that, from seismic and environmental standpoint, are used in regions like ours”, - said to “Interpressnews” Teimuraz Kopadze, Chief Operations Officer of “Nenskra Hydro”, developer of Nenskra HPP project. As he said, advanced technologies would be used in the context of HPP operation and monitoring. According to Mr. Kopadze, a specific type of agreement has been concluded with the government to carry out the project. In particular, after construction, the investor will operate the HPP for 36 years before handing it over for free to the government of Georgia. Another factor that stands out “Nenskra HPP” from other HPPs is that the state will have full control over the use of the generated power. It will be entirely up to the state whether it will use the power generated to meet the internal demand of the country or export it. After the construction of the HPP, the investor will actually operate the generated electric power but not transfer it or decide on tariffs – they are fixed and agreed upon during the operational phase. According to the existing agreement, the HPP will be operated for 36 years but the state is entitled to fully buy it out from the investor for a certain sum.

The HPP will be operated by K-water, Korean Water Resources Corporation that enjoys over 50 years of work experience in various countries across the world”, said Teimuraz Kopadze. According to him, the HPP will have an installed power equal to 280MW, and the annual generation of the electric power will amount to 1’200.00 GWh. As Kopadze said, the key advantage of the HPP is that it will ensure stable generation of electric power in winter and fully fits the country’s internal demands. As opposed to Nenskra HPP, other HPPs generate more power in summer period. The purpose of construction of a high dam HPP is to ensure the reservoir that will store water to be further used in winter. Therefore, Nenskras HPP will ensure stable generation of power in any season of a year. To compare with Enguri HPP, the storage capacity of Nenskra HPP reservoir is ten times as little. The surface area of Nenskra HPP reservoir is 2.7 km 2 compared to 13.5 km 2 of Enguri HPP. The dam will be 125 m high. However, the turbines will be placed downstream away from the dam and connected through a tunnel. This will ensure pressure head and high efficiency of the turbines”, - stated the Chief Operations Officer of “Nenskra Hydro”.
