Ministry of Economy: Unemployment Rate Drops to 12.7 Percent, Lowest In 15 Years

“The rate of unemployment in 2018, compared to the previous year, was decreased by 1,2% and equaled to 12,7%, which is the lowest indicator in the last 15 years,” – Ekaterine Mikabadze, the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development stated when commenting on employment and unemployment data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GeoStat). According to Mikabadze, the fact that the number of employed workers exceeded the number of self-employed people and its share in the total number of employment equaled to 50,8%, indicates the increase in the number of jobs generated in the productive sectors of economy.

“The decrease in the unemployment rate has led to stable economic indicators that have been observed during the recent years in Georgia in line the decreased rate of economic growth in the Region. It is important that the unemployment rate has reached the lowest mark in the last 15 years. Unemployment is decreased both among men and women,” – Ekaterine Mikabadze said.

According to the Deputy Minister, the unemployment rate among men has decreased by 1,1% totaling to 13,9%, while among women the number was decreased by 1,5% and equaled to 11,2. In general, the number of unemployed in 2018 was decreased by 30,7 thousand people and the number of employees amounted to 245,7 thousand person.

According to Ekaterine Mikabadze, the number of employees in 2018 decreased by 12,4 thousand and 1694,2 thousand. “A small reduction in the number of employed people is due to a decrease in the number of self-employed people, and the number of employed workers significantly was increased by 35,9 thousand and amounted to 860,2 thousand people. The number of self-employed people was decreased by 48,2 thousand and equaled to 833,4 thousand persons,” – the Deputy Minister noted.
