Hong Kong Business Delegation Pays Official Visit to Georgia

The official business delegation from Hong Kong has paid an official visit to Georgia on March 18th-19th. The delegation from Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) held several meetings with major stakeholders in Georgia.

Delegation was led by the Secretary of Trade and Economic Development Council of HKTDC, Edward Yau. Yau expressed the interest for deepening trade and economic relations with Georgia.

“Georgia is the country of strategic location, it is the gate for having relations with Europe. We are interested with different infrastructural projects, ports and roads. We are also interested in the railway and in funding start-ups or innovations. There are some similarities between Georgia and Hong-Kong. They both have free economy, which will help us in the cooperation.”, stated Yau.

As part of the visit, business forum “Investment Opportunities in Georgia” was organized by “Enterprise Georgia”, agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development. Several important presentations regarding Georgian business environment, investment potentials and state programs were shown during the forum”.

Director of Enterprise Georgia, Mikheil Khidureli emphasized the importance of this cooperation after the event. Khidureli stated that “Georgia is a certain hub for Hong-Kong. Here is has the possibility to produce and get the access to the market worth 2.3 billion by using the free trade agreement. We are the only country in the region which has the free trade agreement with Europe and China at the same time”.

Moreover, delegation members had the meetings with Georgian Chamber of Commerce, as well as Vice PM, Maia Tskitishvili, Minister of Finance, Vano Matchavariani and Minister of Economy, Giorgi Kobulia.

“We hope that Hong Kong will become one of our important trade and business partners”, stated Kobulia after the meeting with Hong Kong delegation.
Kobula also added that the delegation expressed big interest in many different sectors of Georgia, such as energy, production, technology, IT sectors.

This is not the first time Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC ) pays the official visit to Georgia. Last year the free trade agreement was formed between Georgia and the administrative region of Hong-Kong. The agreement gives the possibility for new perspectives in the field of trade relations between two countries.
Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) is a normative unit, which was created in 1966 with the aim of developing trade sector in Hong Kong. Council has 50 offices worldwide, out of which 13 are in China. One of the main objectives of the council is to present Hong Kong as bilateral global investment and business hub.
