Death toll from explosion rises to four, PM declared 17 January as a mourning day

Four people have been killed and at least seven have been injured in a powerful explosion in Didi Digomi, residential district of Tbilisi. Among dead and wounded are children. The explosion took place on the sixth floor of a nine-storey building.  

Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze has declared 17th of January as a national day of mourning.

The reason of explosion has yet to be investigated. Police and residents think that gas leak may have caused the tragedy.

According to Davit Sergeenko Minister of Health of Georgia, the injured have been transferred to various hospitals in Tbilisi. Among them are four children. Sergeenko says that their health condition is satisfactory. 

President of Georgia Salome Zourabishvili has visited the site. Zourabishvili said that she is deeply touched by the tragedy and offered her condolences to the families of those who died.

The residents of the building will be accommodated by the city hall of Tbilisi.
